# Theme and Widgets

## What are the theme and visualizations?

This page covers two workspace settings. The theme is the colors and number formats every chart in the
workspace uses unless a dashboard sets its own. Custom visualizations are charts your workspace writes
as code, for shapes the built-in widget types cannot draw.

## What does the theme set?

Admins edit the theme under **Settings → Theme**. It has three cards.

| Card | What it sets |
|---|---|
| Series | The ordered colors charts draw from, between 3 and 12. A one-series chart uses the first, and a chart with more series takes them in order |
| Sentiments | **Positive** (above or on target), **Negative** (below or off target), **Muted** (neutral) and **Warning** (at risk) |
| Formats | **Date** style, **Currency**, **Locale** and **Timezone**, used wherever a widget does not set its own |

**Add a color** adds a series color and each color can be removed. The pane has no way to reorder
them, so ask the built-in assistant or your agent to set the palette in the order you want.

Sentiment colors carry meaning across every dashboard. A KPI showing a decline takes the negative color
wherever it appears, so good and bad news look the same everywhere.

Charts pick up the theme each time they draw. A palette change restyles every dashboard at once, with
nothing fetched again and nothing rebuilt.

The **Timezone** default also sets where a new [refresh schedule](/docs/dashboards/refresh) keeps time.

A dashboard can override any part of the theme for itself. You set only what differs, and the rest
follows the workspace. Overrides are saved in the dashboard's [version history](/docs/dashboards/history),
so restoring a version brings back how the dashboard looked as well as what it held.

## Where do custom visualizations live?

**Settings → Widgets** lists the built-in widget types, grouped by who provides them, and then your
workspace's own visualizations under **Custom**. A visualization draws a chart such as a marimekko
chart or a circle pack, and a dashboard shows it in a widget like any other
([Widgets](/docs/dashboards/widgets)).

Every member can open **Settings → Widgets** and write a visualization. Editing or deleting someone else's visualization is for its author or a workspace admin.

A new workspace comes with a few example visualizations, plus the ones its demo dashboards draw with.
There is also a gallery to copy from. A copy is your own visualization, and later changes to the gallery
never reach it.

## How do visualizations work?

A widget points at a visualization and keeps no copy of its code, so an edit reaches every dashboard
that uses it at once. When your agent edits one, it reports which dashboards changed. The
assistant asks before it edits a visualization that a dashboard uses.

Each visualization runs in a sandbox and is handed the workspace theme, so it matches the palette
without being told the colors. Visualizations keep their versions, and any version can be restored.

A visualization is either private to its author or shared with the workspace, which decides who can
find it to reuse. Anyone who can open a dashboard sees every chart on it, whichever setting it has.

## When is a visualization archived or deleted?

A visualization that no live dashboard has used for 90 days is archived. It leaves the listings, and
editing it or putting it back on a dashboard brings it back. **Include archived** on the Widgets page
shows archived visualizations, and **Restore** in a visualization's menu brings one back by hand.

Vistazo never deletes a visualization on its own. You delete one by hand, and deleting is refused while
any widget still uses it.
