# Notifications

## What are notifications?

Notifications tell you when something happens to the dashboards, discussions and shares you are
part of. They arrive under the **Notifications** bell in the app, and by email if you want them. **Settings →
Notifications** has one row for each kind of news, with an **In-app** switch and an **Email** switch.
One row can cover several events. **Connection issues**, for example, covers every way a scheduled
refresh can stall.

A finished chat run sends no notification. If the tab is open you see a toast, and otherwise nothing.

## Where do you see past notifications?

**View all**, at the foot of the bell, opens the notifications page. It lists every notification in
the workspace you are in, read and unread, newest first, back about three months. **History**, at the
top of **Settings → Notifications**, opens it too.

- Search finds a notification by its message. It looks through your latest 500 notifications.
- Filter by **Type**, **Dashboard**, **Status** (unread or read) and **Date**. The search and the
filters stay in the page's address, so a bookmarked link opens filtered.
- Select a row to open what it is about. A metric alert row opens that dashboard's Subscriptions pane,
which lists each metric that moved.
- **Load more**, at the end of the list, shows older notifications.
- **Mark all read** is the double check mark at the top of the page, and at the top of the bell.

Notifications are deleted after about three months.

Repeated activity collects into one unread row, such as "Maya and 2 others commented on Country
Sections". The row moves back to the top as activity arrives, and the next activity after you read it
starts a new row.

## What does each setting cover?

| Group | Row | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Dashboards | Activity | A dashboard you subscribe to is archived, restored or rolled back to an earlier version, or another editor changes an embed key on something you own |
| Dashboards | Connection issues | A scheduled refresh keeps failing or was paused, or a chart can't be computed for someone's filters |
| Dashboards | Metrics | A metric you set an alert on crosses a threshold, changes by the amount you chose, or is flagged by anomaly detection |
| Discussions | Mentions and replies | Someone `@mentions` you, or replies in a thread you are in |
| Discussions | Comments | New comments on dashboards you subscribe to |
| Sharing | Access requests | Someone asks for access to a dashboard, notebook, chat or skill of yours |
| Sharing | Shared with you | Someone shares a dashboard, notebook, chat or skill with you, or makes you its owner |
| Workspace | Join requests | Someone asks to join the workspace |
| Workspace | New members | Someone accepts an invitation and joins |
| Workspace | New connections | An admin adds a connection you can sign in to, such as a Snowflake account or a Salesforce org. The email has a **Connect** button that opens it |

A single failed refresh, and a chart Vistazo rebuilt after its source changed shape, appear in-app
only and are never emailed.

**Join requests** and **New members** go to admins, so their rows appear only if you are an admin of at
least one shared workspace. **New connections** goes to every member, so its row appears if you belong
to at least one shared workspace. Choices you made in a hidden row are kept, and come back if the row
does.

## How do you subscribe to a dashboard?

Comments, and news of a dashboard being archived, restored or rolled back, reach you only for
dashboards you subscribe to. You are subscribed when you create a dashboard, star it or are given edit
access to it. **Subscribe** and **Unsubscribe** are in each dashboard's `⋯` menu, and Subscribe
also opens the dashboard's alerts for all widgets, to set metric alerts in the same step.

If **Comments** is on and you hear nothing, you are probably not subscribed to that dashboard. Mentions and
replies never depend on subscribing, so someone who names you always reaches you.

To stop hearing about one busy thread and stay subscribed to the dashboard, switch on **Mute thread** in
the thread's ⋯ menu. A muted thread sends you no replies or comments, and
mentions still arrive.

## How do notification emails work?

A row's email depends on its in-app switch. Turning a row off in-app turns its email off too, because
there is no notification for the email to be about.

Every notification email ends with **Unsubscribe** and **Manage notifications**. Unsubscribe takes the
smallest step that stops that email.

| Email | What Unsubscribe does |
|---|---|
| A reply or a comment | Mutes the thread |
| One that depends on subscribing | Unsubscribes you from the dashboard |
| A metric alert | Pauses alerts on the dashboards in it |
| Any other | Turns off that row's email switch |

**Manage notifications** opens **Settings → Notifications** and changes nothing.

## When does the metrics digest arrive?

Each metric alert arrives as it happens or in a daily digest, and you choose which on each widget
([Metric alerts](/docs/dashboards/alerts)). The **Metrics digest** row under **Metrics** sets the hour
the digest arrives. It applies to the workspace you are in, follows your browser's time zone, and
starts at 8:00 AM.

## Which notices are always sent?

Two notices are always sent, because they report something done to your account or workspace. One
tells you when Vistazo support signed in under access you granted
([Security](/docs/account/security#what-is-support-access)). The other tells admins when Vistazo moves one of
the workspace's model choices off a model its provider retired.
